Alta Marie North

Alta M. North died on Wednesday October 26, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, she was 88 years old. She was born on November 23, 1922 in Yeddo, Indiana to George and Ola Woodrow. In the spring of 1941 a friend introduced her to Thomas H. North and not even World War II could separate them. They married on April 27, 1944, he preceded her in death. The couple had four sons, Thomas H. North III and Linda (Spear) of Carbondale, Alan H. North and Jo (Dougherty) of Fishers Indiana, Norman H. North (deceased) and Mark H. North and Gayle (Fozard) of Sparta. Alta worked a variety of jobs, raised 4 sons and assisted her husband who was blinded during the war to gain his masters degree. In 1969 she went to work for Carbondale Elementary District #95 as a secretary working at the Central Office, Springmore, Lakeland and Lewis schools until she retired in 1988. She was voted into the Elementary School Hall of Fame in 1987. Alta was a fan of Saluki Football, Terrier athletics and followed Marion and Sparta sports where her son's coached. She enjoyed traveling with her family all over the country and the world, reading romance novels, and spoiling her 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held November 11 at the First Christian Church in Carbondale with a visitation from 6:00 to 7:00 and a brief service at 7:00. Pastor Kathryn Graves will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family asks for a contribution to the 1st Christian Church or Southern Illinois Hospice.
