Amos Harold Covington

July 28, 1933 — July 14, 2022

CARBONDALE – Amos Harold Covington, 88, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.

Amos was born on July 28, 1933, to William Otis and Hester (Parker) Covington in Carbondale, IL. He married Violet Irene Crawshaw on July 15, 1956, in Corinth, Mississippi.

During the Korean War, Amos stationed in Japan worked security for the army hospital in the psychiatric ward. After returning home from the war, he worked a brief time for the railroad, then became an SIU Carbondale policeman until his retirement in 1988 as a lieutenant.

As a young man, he built his home in Carbondale including digging out the basement by hand and shovel. Amos also enjoyed spending time on the land tending to his small orchard, vegetable and flower gardens. People would drive from miles around to see the rainbow of colors in the Covingtons’ fields of iris and daylily gardens.

Amos valued his faith and loved the Lord Jesus Christ. His family was the light of his life. He enjoyed many family vacations, fishing and hunting trips with his children and grandchildren.

In 2006, Amos and Violet celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a marriage vow renewal ceremony at Union Hill Christian Church in Carbondale surrounded by their family and friends.

Amos, known for being a strong and proud man, tried to do most things on his own and didn’t like asking for help. He was generous in helping others when they needed it most, believing it was his responsibility to take care of his loved ones, especially if he felt they could not care for themselves. His word was his bond – you could count on him always to fulfill his promises, just as God always fulfills his. He will be truly missed by his family and friends who knew him best and loved him most.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents, son Victor Clint of Carbondale, IL, and sister Rena Hudson of Saint Louis MO.

Amos is survived by his wife Violet Covington; sons Harold Terry Covington and Mark Wade (Diana) Covington, daughter Cindy Irene Covington; Sister Wanda Belmont of San Diego, CA; Four Grandchildren Holly Covington of Austin TX, Jen Covington (Troy) Hershberger of Wake Forest, NC, Thomas Jacob (Tiffany) Covington of High Point, NC, Ryan Covington of South Jordan, Utah; Three Great Grandchildren, Nolan, Mazie, and Finley of Wake Forest, NC.
