Clarence "Red" Niehaus

CARBONDALE - Clarence “Red” Niehaus died at age 92 on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at his daughter’s Hillsboro, Missouri home.



He was born in Farina, Illinois on November 13, 1927, the son of Louis and Alma (Wacholtz) Niehaus.



He married Lillian Ruth (Carter) Niehaus in Rock Hill, South Carolina on September 3, 1955. Ruth proceeded Clarence in death on March 9, 1998.



Clarence married Charlotte (Chapman) Niehaus on October 30, 1999 in Carbondale, Illinois.



He is survived by his wife Charlotte; two daughters, Debi (Denny) Sparks of Hillsboro, Missouri; Janice Niehaus of St. Louis, Missouri; three step-children, Gail (Mike) Peterman of Carbondale; Scott Chapman of Carbondale; Bryan (Janice) Chapman of Winter Springs, Florida; two grandchildren, Amber Babb, Daniel (Emily) Perschbacher; six step-grandchildren, Jenna Schultz, Justin Peterman, Jessica Chapman, Bradley Chapman, Stephen Chapman, and Jimmy Chapman; three great-grandchildren, Lillie, Landon and Amelia; two step-great-grandchildren, Bentley and McKenna; and sisters, Melinda, Iva, Fern, Jonnie, and Pat.



Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army as a Corporal in the Korean War. He worked as a superintendent for Baker Forms Construction Company for 47 years until his retirement. During his career Clarence contributed to the construction of many buildings, 12 of which are located on Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus, including the Student Center, Saluki Stadium, McLeod Theater, Communications Building, Quigley Hall and Faner Hall.



He was a member of his local VFW, American Legion, Indiana Carpenter’s Union, and an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Carbondale. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, and wood working.



He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth; daughter Sheila Marie Niehaus; sisters Velva, Wilma, and Jane; and brothers Leon and Orville.



Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale with Pastor Robert Gray officiating, followed by Clarence’s burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro with Military Rites. Visitation will be from 10 – 11AM on Thursday at the church.



Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale.
