Carbondale - Dennis R. Hannon, 66, of Carbondale, passed away at 10:22 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Dennis was born September 29, 1947 in Chicago to Richard Joseph and Edna Bernice (Stark) Hannon. He married Dianne Lynn Shroka on June 13, 1970 in Skokie. She survives and is of Carbondale. Other survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Scott (Heather) Hannon of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer (Josh) Mostyn of Palm Harbor, FL; brother, Mike (Mary) Hannon of Park Ridge; sister, Phyllis (Ron) Pierce of Palm Harbor, FL; granddaughter, Avary and step grandson, Ethan Gurley; two sister-in-laws, Pamela Blair of South Elgin and Julie Shroka of Grayslake; and mother-in-law, Adeline Opielinski of Des Plaines. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Kenneth H. Shroka. Dennis served in the Navy as an Airman, from July 1, 1971 to September 23, 1972, and he retired in 1990 as Chief Yeoman. He received his first Bachelor's degree from Loyola University, and his second Bachelor's degree from SIU in Applied Science and Art. He received his Masters of Public Administration from SIU. He graduated with a certificate from DeVry Institute for Home Electronic Systems II. Dennis was an Assistant Professor for the SIU Aviation (AVTECH). He received Teacher of the Year from 2009 - 2010 and 2011 - 2012. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League Inc.; Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS); Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA); Experimental Aircraft Association; and a Cub Scout Den Leader from 1984 - 1987. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Grand Ave Christian Church, Carbondale, with Rev. Jon Hughes officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the SIU Foundation % Aviation Technologies Development and will be accepted at the funeral home.
