Dick Conley

March 28, 1945 — July 7, 2022

MAKANDA - Dick Conley of Makanda, Illinois, left for his next adventure on July 7, 2022.

Dick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Roxanne Conley, Children Robin Ann Cutting (Skip), Brett Conley, Curtis Conley and Derek Conley. Grandchildren Amy O'Sullivan (Larry), Anna Little (Michael) Alex, Adrienne, Brandon, Tyler, Chase, Emily and Rowan. He is also survived by his older brothers Larry Conley of Oregon and Tom Conley (Betty) of Colorado, and his lifelong friend Bill Wiberg (Lori) of Florida.

Dick and his first wife Linda founded the business Arnold's Market in Carbondale Il. Arnold's Markets success was a sense of pride for Dick. He always said the reason was he had great mix employees (Arnold's) that were key to the success of the business. Hiring Joy Sanders as the head butcher, created Arnold's Image as the best meat counter in the area. It would be impossible to name all of the employees in this writing and to leave anyone out would be wrong.

This report would be amiss without mentioning Dick's love of Saluki Athletics. Football and basketball were his favorites, but he followed all of the teams closely. In 57 years he only missed a handful of games, one to attend his daughter's wedding. He also supported and loved Southern Illinois University and that caused him to live permanently in Southern Illinois.

Dick stayed close to his extensive family in northern Illinois, countless cousins who are all very loving and supportive. Suzanne McCormack, Ann Lorden, and Nancy McGinn, were his three cousins he talked to often. His friends from Walnut gathered annually until an ailment or another issues cancelled the gatherings. The group embraced technology (sort of) to text or PM each other.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Red and Clare Conley and infant daughter Brandi Conley.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 23rd from 11AM - 3PM at The Haven on Crab Orchard Lake. Dress casually as he would want it.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Saluki Athletic Scholarship Fund.
