Carbondale - Doris Jean Williams, 88, of Carbondale, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was born on September 10, 1928, in Anna, Illinois, the daughter of Tullie M. Millis and Myrtle (Henard) Millis.
She graduated from Anna-Jonesboro High School in 1946. She was married to John M. Williams for almost 65 years beginning with their union on August 30, 1952 in Carbondale. For many years, using her superior skills as a seamstress, Doris operated her own fabric store, D&J Fabrics. She was later employed by Nutrition Headquarters, playing a significant role in opening the store when they came to Carbondale. She also worked as manager of JoAnn Fabrics and manager/co-owner of Wildwood Mobile Home Park in Carbondale.
Doris was a devoted volunteer. She freely gave her time to the Jackson County Homemakers Extension, Eastern Star and Pink Geranium at Memorial Hospital. Compassionate and loyal to her place of worship she served University Baptist Church, Carbondale, in a variety of capacities throughout her life. She organized and orchestrated countless church wedding meals and baby showers. For many years she was a member of the South Highway 51 Club and the Sewing Club of Carbondale.
Besides being a talented seamstress she was a wonderful cook and rarely encountered a recipe she wouldn’t attempt and most likely master. Along with her husband she created a loving and nurturing home for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Williams of Paducah, Kentucky, and one daughter, Lee Ann Eddins and husband Stu of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, two granddaughters, Erin Wiltowski and husband Jacek of Carbondale, Lauren Williams of Carbondale, and two great grandsons, Jackson and Maxwell Wiltowski of Carbondale.
