Dorothy H. Nelson

Carbondale - Dorothy H. Nelson, 89, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully at 7:44 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was born January 30, 1926 in Durham, NC, to Richard T. and Mamie (Royster) Howerton. She married Earl Volney Nelson on August 29, 1953 in Durham, NC. He preceded her in death. Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Carl Richard and his wife Darlene Nelson of Loveland, OH, Timothy Dean Nelson of Des Moines, IA and Pastor Philip Wesley and his wife Melanie Nelson of Carbondale; eleven grandchildren, Megan (Paul) Miller, Catherine (Jason) Allison, Peter Wesley Nelson, Rebekah Nelson, Hannah Nelson, Lydia Nelson, Braden (Erin) Prickett, Jennifer (Brandon) Foy, Michael Nelson, Jeremiah Evans and David Nelson; and thirteen great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Nelson, parents, brothers, Richard Howerton, Thomas Royster Howerton, and Beverly Howerton. After Dorothy obtained her Master's degree in Education, she went on to teach math for 39 years, completing her teaching career at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA until her retirement in 1991. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Lakeland Baptist Church of Carbondale with Pastor Philip Nelson officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Lakeland Baptist Church for the Lottie Moon Christmas offering, and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. II Timothy 4: 7-8
