Dr. David Ford Lee Rendleman

CARBONDALE - Dr. David Ford Lee Rendleman, 86, passed away at 2:55 p.m. on Friday, December 25, 2015 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Dr. Rendleman was born on April 23, 1929 to Ford Lee and Eugenia (Shomaker) Rendleman in Anna. He married Mary Elizabeth Greer on June 5, 1954 at Vandalia, Illinois and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in law, Jill Rendleman and husband Bill Vogler of Cobden, Amy Rendleman of Glen Carbon and Dr. Laurie and husband Dr. Chris Massa of Nicholasville, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Wesley, Sean and Mary York, Nicole Stewart, Sam, Liz, Emma and Leah Massa; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John S. Rendleman and sister, Jody Bankoff. Dr. Rendleman completed his premedical degree at SIU Carbondale, after which he received an MD degree from University of Illinois in 1954. After completing his medical internship at St. Louis City Hospital, he joined the Medical Corps of the US Navy serving as Lieutenant Commander aboard the USS Winston. He later joined the Navy Reserves achieving the rank of Commander. He completed his surgical residency at Rush Presbyterian Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Rendleman was a surgeon at both the Carbondale Clinic and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion and became Chief of Surgery at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He served on the Board of Directors of the Carbondale Clinic, was Professor at SIU School of Medicine and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Over the years he was actively involved within his community. He served on the Committee to Desegregate Carbondale Public Schools. He also served on the SIU Board of Trustees along with serving as the Director of the University Bank of Carbondale. He was actively involved and supported community fund drives including the SIU School of Medicine, Carbondale Public Library, YMCA, United Way, SIH Cancer Center, SIU Foundation and SIU Athletics. He was also a member of Phi Kappa Tau in Carbondale. He served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale where he was a member over the past 61 years. Funeral Services for Dr. Rendleman will be on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale with Pastor Janice West officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. A private family burial will be held immediately after the funeral service. The family requests no flowers and in remembrance memorials may be given to the Dr. David F. and Mary Rendleman Pre Med Scholarship Endowment Fund in care of the SIU Foundation or to the SIH Cancer Center or St. Francis Care Animal Shelter or Marion Medical Mission or First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale and will be accepted at the church or Meredith Funeral Home.
