Dr. Harold G. Halterman

Harold Halterman was born November 7, 1922, in Carbondale to Thomas & Lois (Mc Sparin) Halterman. He married Anna K. (Easterly) on November 16, 1946 and resided in the Carbondale/Murphysboro area for over 65 years. He passed away on July 2, 2014 in College Station, TX of Lewy Body Dementia. Visitation will at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale from 5-8 Tuesday. Services will be at the First Christian Church in Carbondale on Wednesday at 10:00. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Memorial Park between Carbondale and Murphysboro. One of the "pickles" brothers, he was a gifted athlete at both Carbondale Community High School and Southern Illinois University High School where he graduated in 1941. Joining the Navy in support of World War II, he rose to Boatswain Mate first class and was involved with much war action that he earned six battle stars. He served throughout the south pacific and Asia on the Battleship Pennsylvania, Destroyer Murray and Attack Transport Noble. Upon returning from the war in 1946 he resumed employment with the Illinois Central Railroad as a switchman and rose to engine foreman. He attended SIU and graduated from the Logan College of Chiropractic with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1953. He owned and operated the Halterman Chiropractic Clinic in Anna for over 37 years where he cared for many patients. Community service was his calling; he served locally on many boards and was president of the Anna Chamber of Commerce, the Carbondale Lions Club and the Jackson County-Carbondale AARP. He was also the adjutant of the Carbondale VFW, a 50+ year member of the Carbondale Elks Lodge 1243; 50+ year member of the Anna American Legion, Life member of the SIU alumni association and a longtime member of the Jackson Country Club. Statewide, he held many leadership posts and served on the board of directors of the Illinois Chiropractic Society being elected as president in 1965. In 1977, he was appointed by Governor Thompson to the board of the Illinois Public Aid committee where he eventually served as president. Nationally and international recognized for his long term exemplary service to his profession, he was made a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractic. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Marcy Halterman-Cox and Russell Cox of College Station, TX, and son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Deborah Halterman of Lindenhurst, IL; grandchildren, Marissa Halterman, Aine and Eva Cox; brothers Gerald, Edward and Charles Halterman, and sister Rev. Ruth Milgate. He is preceded in death by Anna, his wife of 62 years, and brothers James, Cyrus and Earl Halterman. Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and can be made to the SIU Foundation designated for the Dr. Harold and Anna Halterman Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund is established for the benefit of Jackson County high school graduates who attend SIU. Envelopes will be available and accepted by the Meredith Funeral home.
