Elisabeth Latimer Mitchell

Carbondale - Elisabeth Latimer Mitchell, formerly of Carbondale, passed away on July 9, 2014 in Hilton Head, SC. Elisabeth was born September 25, 1918 in Eldorado Illinois. She was the daughter of Leland Stanford Latimer and Romaine Whitley Latimer. In 1939, she married James Edward Mitchell Jr., son of James Edward Mitchell and Mollie Vancil Mitchell of Carbondale. He was the grandson of James Cafield Mitchell and Lilly White Mitchell of Marion. Elisabeth and Jim Mitchell lived in Carbondale, Chicago and Marion, Indiana. She graduated from Southern Illinois University. She was a music teacher and active in civic clubs wherever she lived. She is survived by a son, Dr. James Edward Mitchell III (Karen) of Fargo ND and a daughter, Jane Mitchell May (Douglas) of Hilton Head, South Carolina. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Oakland Cemetery with Pastor Janice West officiating. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, to please make donations in her name to Tidewater Hospice, 10 Buckingham Plantation Dr., Ste A, Bluffton, SC 29910, and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale.
