Harold Nelson

June 30, 2023 — March 14, 2014

De Soto - Harold Nelson, 90, died peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Harold was born June 30, 1923 in Battle Creek, MI, to Gladys and Hollis (Taylor) Nelson. He married Anna Mae Hicks on June 30, 1949. She preceded him in death in 2003. Harold is survived by his stepson, Herb (Alma) Hicks; step granddaughter, Vicki Hicks; step grandson, Alan (Nancy) Hicks; great grandchildren, Brian, Brad and Lindsay Blaise, Chris and Logan Hicks; great great grandson, Ryan Blaise; niece Jeri (Jim) Kelly; nephew, Bill (Georgia) Trinkner of TN, and their children, Kristy, Kelly, Wendy, Scott and April Trinkner. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Doris Trinkner. Harold served his country as a Navy Seaman 1/c from 1943 - 1946. After 24 years of service, he retired as a custodial supervisor from Southern Illinois University. He had also farmed for many years. He was a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau, American Legion Post #664, the Masonic Lodge of Hurst and the Marion Seventh-Day Adventists Church. Harold enjoyed being with people. He and Ann seemed to always have guest for the wonderful meals she prepared. He especially liked being with his family for special occasions; the concerts, programs and events his grandchildren and great grandchildren participated in. He would never turn down a call from his buddies, Ike and Al, to have coffee so they could do their part to help 'solve the world's problems' and keep up with current news. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Hospice of Southern Illinois and Carbondale Rehab for their outstanding care during his brief illness. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Pastor Adrian Amarandei officiating. Interment will be at De Soto Cemetery, in De Soto. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Marion Seventh-Day Adventists Church, or Hospice of Southern Illinois, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
