Imajean "Jean" Snell

September 4, 1942 — April 15, 2020

Carbondale – Imajean “Jean” Snell, 77, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born September 4, 1942 to Connie William and Zella Le Nora (Robertson) Meggs in Wynne, Arkansas. She married Richard Lee Snell on June 15, 1962 in Thebes, Illinois.

Jean had a great love of school. She graduated from SIU with her Bachelor’s in Science in Elementary Education in 1964 and her Masters in Science in Curriculum & Instruction in 1989. But she continued to take classes, trainings, and anything else she could so that she would make herself a better teacher.

She started teaching in 1964 in Cape Girardeau, MO and retired in 2005 in Carbondale, IL. But Jean couldn’t just retire. She then went on to do workshops and then worked on a grant for years that helped teachers learn to teach math. She was dedicated to her craft and always went above and beyond.

Jean always had a fondness for nature, wildlife, and animals. She worked with the Cache River organization and loved going and counting frogs….yes counting frogs. She would listen to the different types and be able to tell you what they were. She had quite a collection of frog memorabilia.

There is no way to list all of the accomplishments she had both in her personal and professional life. She was an amazing woman that touched the life of so many.

Nothing was more important than her family. Not only her husband and daughter, but her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. It gave her great joy to talk to any of them and to learn of all they did. She had so much love to give.

Jean is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter Cynthia (Danny) Chester of Carbondale. Two brothers; Wayne and Ted Meggs and three sisters: Norie Lovell, Brenda Turner, and Rosemary Inserra.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, six brothers, and one sister.

Private family graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thebes.

Memorials in Jean’s name may be made to Friends of Cache River and St. Francis Animal Shelter.

Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale assisted the family with arrangements.
