John Joseph Montacue Iii

August 30, 1959 — December 17, 2012

CARBONDALE - John Joseph Montacue III, 53, of Carbondale, and formerly of Centralia, entered into rest on Monday, December 17, 2012 at his residence. John was born in Breese, Illinois, August 30, 1959, to John and Jean (Newkirk) Montacue Jr. His mother preceded him in death on March 30, 1978. He attended Centralia High School, Kaskaskia College and graduated from Southern Illinois University with the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Political Science on May 15, 1982. He also had a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism. John suffered a life threatening neck injury in 1979, while playing basketball, which left him paraplegic. After a long rehabilitation in St Louis, Missouri, he continued to work out on weights the rest of his life, for strength. He drove his car with hand controls. While attending SIU, he became a player coach of the SIU Wheelchair basketball team. John taught political science at John A. Logan College in Carterville for approximately 26 years, and was the longtime President of the Term Faculty Union. He loved music and was an avid guitar player. He composed many songs and recorded on CD's. He was a collector of comic books and music cd's. In addition to his father, he is survived by his sisters, Karen Montacue of Mehlville, Missouri, Terri Castleman of Centralia, Janet Myers of Port Byron, and Kelly Kampwerth of Summerville, South Carolina and many nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Meredith Funeral Home, in Carbondale, is assisting the family with arrangements.
