Obituary for Lucille Elizabeth Ashworth

CARBONDALE – Lucille Elizabeth Ashworth, age 90, passed away on March 8, 2019. She was born on March 22, 1928, as Lucille Elizabeth Quebe. She was born at home in Indianapolis, Indiana, the first child of Christian and Elizabeth Quebe. She was the oldest of three siblings, Lawrence and Elaine Quebe, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Southport High School in Indianapolis in 1946 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Purdue University where she received both her degrees, a B.S. in chemistry and a M.S. in counseling. She also participated in sports at Purdue, including women’s softball, field hockey, and tennis, and often captained her team.

Lucille was married in 1950 to Edwin Robert Ashworth of Evansville, Indiana, also a graduate of
Purdue University in engineering. They moved to several universities, including Oklahoma State
University, Auburn University, and Tuskegee Institute, before finally arriving at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1963.Lucille and Bob raised four children in Carbondale, Illinois. Lucille is survived by all four children: David Charles Ashworth of Carbondale, IL; Myra Yvonne Harris and her husband Charles Harris of Carterville, IL, and their two daughters, Michelle Harris of Santa Rosa, California, and Hannah Harris of Chicago, IL; Stephen Andrew Ashworth, his wife Rhonda Ashworth and their three children, John, Sarah and Marie Ashworth, all of Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and Michael Robert Ashworth, his wife Kathy Ashworth and their two children, Lauren and Brooke Ashworth, all of Nashville, Tennessee; her nephews, Richard Ashworth and his wife Olga Ashworth of Parker, Colorado, and their children and grandchildren; James Ashworth and his wife Janie of Carlinville, IL, and their children and grandchildren, along with other children and grandchildren of her niece, Jo Ann Ashworth. Her husband, Edwin Robert (Bob) Ashworth, preceded her in death in 2002.

Lucille taught two years of mechanical drawing in Lafayette, Indiana and also worked for Eli Lilly in their laboratory in Indianapolis, Indiana. After teaching she became a full-time homemaker raising her family. She was active in Church Women United and served as a guest speaker at various churches. She also drew the floor plans for the chapel at the women’s prison in Dwight, Illinois, and helped design the floor plans for Grace Presbyterian Church in Carbondale, IL. She taught Bible studies in every church she attended. From these studies and with the help of Bob typing the document, she self-published a book about the Book of Revelation, titled “Revelation: Signs of the Times” in 1990. She was a member of several churches. The last one was Murdale Baptist Church of Carbondale, IL. She was a woman of faith in the Lord Jesus as her personal savior. Lucille knew of joy in this life through her Lord, her family, and her friends. Now she celebrates joy unspeakable in the fullness of God’s presence.
