Mark Doman

January 27, 1969 — May 20, 2014

Carbondale - Mark James Doman, 45, of Carbondale, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 20, from cardiac arrest. Mark was born on Jan. 27, 1969, in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Carbondale schools and was graduated from Carbondale Community High School in 1987, where he was a member of the Terrier football team. He started college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and went on to graduate magna cum laude from SIU Edwardsville with a bachelor's of science degree in management information systems from the School of Business and Information Technology. While at SIUE, Mark was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. Mark's enthusiasm for life expressed itself through his dedication to family, friends, cycling, hiking, camping, fishing, sports, and providing a safe and loving home for stray cats. Mark possessed a generous spirit valued by his friends and family, in particular his six nieces and nephews. He is treasured and remembered for his conscientious manner, his sense of humor, his laughter, and his innate ability and drive to help others. He loved music, and during his college years he and his friends formed a band (The Burn) that played at several venues around Carbondale. He had a lifelong love for vigorous cycling in Southern Illinois, particularly the areas around Giant City State Park, and the rolling rural hills south and west of the city. He was dedicated to his riding and to the companionship of friends on and off the road. When Mark lost much of his eyesight in 2012, he continued to ride with friends and his father, Tom, one of his favorite biking companions. Mark began his professional life working for Aramark Services in Belleville, where he was designated as a top performer for the company, and then joined Sabre Technology, a start-up information technology company in O'Fallon, Ill. He was co-founder and vice president of New Madrid Technology Company doing contract work with the U.S. Coast Guard. He returned to Carbondale and worked for eight years as network administrator for the Southern Illinoisan. Survivors include his parents, Patricia Arey of Carbondale and Thomas M. Doman of Edwardsville; his sisters Rebecca Arno (Rick) of Denver, Colo., and Linda Kosten (Ken) of Centennial, Colo., and brother, Scott Arey (Beth) of Glenview. He is also survived by his uncles: David Doman (Virginia) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Roger Doman (Vicki) of Naperville, Lewis A. Doman (Joann) of Pensacola, Fla., and Brad Hilton of Belleville; his aunts: Susan Arnold (Ty) of Kailua, Hawaii, Connie Duffield (Graham) of Las Vegas, Nev., Patricia Wooley (Richard) of Bethalto, Katherine Brandt of Oceanside, Calif., as well as his particularly beloved aunt Joanne Chezem of Carbondale; his step-grandmother Janet Hilton of Galesburg, and by his nieces and nephews, Kate, Alex, and Quinn Arey, Nicholas Arno, and Rebecca and David Kosten.
