Mary Evelyn Murray

April 12, 1948 — March 31, 2022

Mary Evelyn (Humble) Murray, daughter of Mary A. Moore and Willard Humble, was born April 12, 1948 in Pulaski, Illinois and entered into eternal rest on March 31, 2022 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, Illinois.

Mary was raised in Carbondale, but she lived in several cities across the United States. She was the eldest of four surviving girls, and she will be sorely missed.

Mary’s life was filled with adventure and she lived it to the fullest. She loved her family, good food, designer clothes, and enjoying all of what life had to offer. Her greatest regret was not having children, but she adored her nieces and nephews.

Mary was a proud woman who paved her own way. Now, God has wrapped his arms around her and taken her home. She is at peace now, and her family knows that she could not be in better hands.

Mary was preceded in death by both of her parents; her brother, Willard; and her sisters, Katherine, Birdie and Shirldean. She is survived by her brother, Robert Humble; her sister, Margie Robertson (Ronald); her nieces and nephews, Dion Johnson, Lloyd Hinton III, Gleneesha Williams (Alvester III), Emelina Diaz Wiley, Katherine Schauf-Wiley; their children, DeShawn, DeAndre, Lloyd IV, Aleesha, Aleah, Naomi, and Ki’Marion; a cousin, Barbara Grady; and a host of other family members and friends to mourn her passing.

Phenomenal Woman

by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where

my secret lies.

I'm not cute or built to suit a

fashion model's size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I'm telling lies.

I say, It's in the reach of my

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I'm a woman

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It's the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I'm a woman

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

Men themselves have

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can't touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them

They say they still can't see.

I say,

It's in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I'm a woman

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

Now you understand

Just why my head's not

I don't shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It's in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

The palm of my hand,

The need of my care,

'Cause I'm a woman

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

Daughter, Sister, Cousin, Aunt, Friend...

Mary was a Phenomenal woman, and

we love her and shall always miss her!
