Robert W. "Red" Hill

Carbondale - Robert W. "Red" Hill, 83, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt Vernon, surrounded by his loving family. Red was born March 22, 1930 in Carbondale to Zackary and Hattie Louise (Woods) Hill. They preceded him in death. He married Helen Margarete Turner on February 15, 1954 in Jonesboro. She survives and is of Carbondale. Other survivors include, sons and daughter-in-law, Zachary Hill and Jeff (Gina) Hill all of Carbondale; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Walker and Gary Moon of Energy; grandchildren, Kim Hill and Chuck (Natalie) Walker all of Marion, Rachael Cox Ellis and Chelsea Walker both of Carterville, Jason Hill (Megan McFarland), Maggie, Kevin and Molly Hill all of Carbondale, Robert (Leslie) Cox of Twin Lakes, WI, Macey and Austin Hill of Paxton and Angelique Hill of Cahokia, Scott (Tonya) Walker of Murphysboro, and Heather (Dustin) Pulley of KY; great grandchildren, Taylor Ellis, Caleb and Carson Cox, Carleigh McFarland, Jaxson, Delaney and Logan Hill, and Abby Walker, Jazmine Edwards, and Courtney Roberts; sisters-in-law, Reba Turner, Jeanette Mulholland, and Alma Griffith. Red was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Wayne Hill, daughter, Darlene Cox, granddaughter, Amy Darlene Cox, great granddaughter, Tamaurie Turner and great grandson, Conner Cox, brothers, Harold and Marvin Hill, stepfather, Jack Hill and nephew, Marvin L. Hill Jr. He was of Protestant faith and a member of the South County Line Christian Church of Carbondale. He had worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 22 years as a Carman, until his health forced his disability in 1975. Red enjoyed raising livestock and was well known for it. He and Helen were honored as S.I. Grandparents of the Year. He was an inspiration and encouragement to his family and many others, and a true family man. In 1998, Red was the first recipient of a controlled heart attack at St. Louis University Hospital thanks to Dr. Frank Bleyer. The family would also like to thank the Mt Vernon Health Care Center for their excellent care over the last 6 months. He served our country in the Army as a Corporal from 1948 - 1951; then in the Air Force as an Airman 3rd Class from 1952 - 1954. He was stationed in Germany during his military service. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014 at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale with Rev. Tommy Monroe officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to South County Line Christian Church of Carbondale and will be accepted at the funeral home.
