Roland Richard Edward Keim

Carbondale - Roland Richard Edward Keim passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017. Roland was born in Columbia on August 13, 1934 to Richard and Louise (Kannewurf) Keim. He married Ruth Raeber on July 2, 1955. They were married 49½ years before her death in 2005.



He is survived by his three sons, Thomas (Susan) Keim of Ste. Genevieve, MO, David (Kim) Keim of Carbondale and Douglas (Kimberly) Keim of Tunnel Hill, and a sister Marian (Roger) Hoffmann of Plainfield. Eight grandchildren: Brian (Becky) Keim of Ste. Genevieve, MO, Rachel Keim (fiancé Michael McDaniel) of Ste. Genevieve, MO, Sarah (Dereck) Thomas of Benton, Emily Keim of Carbondale, Justin (Myra) Rogowski of Marion, Andrew (Rachelle) Keim of Marion, Brandon (Emilie) Rogowski of Herrin and Brittany (Jason) Robertson of Goreville. Ten great grandchildren: Kaden Rogowski, Devon Rogowski, Audrey Rogowski, Lydia Rogowski, Kolten Rogowski, Kaylee Keim, Cole Keim, Elizabeth Rogowski, Olivia Rogowski, Harper Robertson and Baby Thomas (due in December). He is also survived by a very dear friend and companion, Virginia Smith of Carbondale.



Also, preceding him in death was a sister, Virginia with brother-in-law Virgil Crook and a brother Roger with sister-in-law Vivian Keim.



He graduated from Columbia High School, Columbia in 1952 and enrolled in Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. His studies were interrupted after two years when he was called to duty by the US Army, serving two years in El Paso, TX. After his discharge in 1956, he was employed by McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis, MO. In 1958, the family moved to Carbondale where he completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees. During which he was a part-time student employee in the Office of Admissions and Records. He was employed at the office for 38 years. He retired from that office as Director of Admissions and Records in December 1996.



He and his wife traveled throughout the United States and Canada as members of the WBCCI (Airstream) Travel Club.



He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale and served in offices and on boards at the church (OSLC) and Southern Illinois District (LCMS).



Visitation will be Wednesday, May 24 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale and the funeral will be held Thursday, May 25 at 10:30 am with visitation before the service from 9:30 am – 10:30 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 700 South University Avenue, Carbondale. Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Memorial Cemetery.
