Tomasz Wiltowski

CARBONDALE – Dr. Tomasz Stanislaw Wiltowski, 69, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at his home with family.



Tomasz was born in Czestochowa, Poland on September 23, 1949 to Janusz and Danuta (Ciszewska) Wiltowski. He married Teresa Mietelska on September 29, 1977 in Krakow, Poland.



Tomasz is survived by two sons, Maciej Wiltowski of Chicago and Jacek (Erin) Wiltowski of Carbondale; two grandchildren, Jackson and Maxwell Wiltowski of Carbondale.



He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother.



Tomasz served as a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes. His most recent role was Director of the Coal Research Center at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. During his 34 year career, Tomasz was a recipient of many prestigious awards and was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Energy to serve on the National Coal Council. His educational background included receiving his Master of Science in chemical engineering from Technical University, Krakow, Poland in 1974 and Ph.D. in catalysis from the Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences in 1984. His special interests included coal and biomass gasification, hydrogen production, Fisher-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels, and heretogeneous catalysis. Tomasz published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored four books. In recognition of his expertise in his field, he was invited to deliver numerous lectures all over the world. Due to his outstanding work he was the recipient of numerous faculty awards and served on the International Advisory Committee for Nanotechnology in Energy and Advanced Energy Research.



Tomasz was truly dedicated to his profession and was a well-respected professor. But above all his academic accomplishments, Tomasz was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. The driving force behind his work was his family. All of Tomasz’s achievements culminated toward the benefit of the ones he loved. His unique sense of humor defined his personality and added to his witty charm. He loved his family and friends dearly and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His family is at peace knowing that Tomasz is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife and other loved ones there waiting to receive him.



Visitation will be 5 – 8 PM, Sunday, December 30, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale. At 7:30PM there will be a Rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10 AM, Monday, December 31, 2018 at St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, Carbondale with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Makanda.



In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice of Southern Illinois will be appreciated.
