Velda "June" Thornton

Goreville - Velda "June" Thornton, 89, of Goreville passed away Friday, February 12, 2016 at Reflections Memory Care Center, Carterville. June was employed as a Dining Room Supervisor in Food Service at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. June was born June 30, 1926 in Makanda, IL to Thomas J. and Iota (Hopkins) Escue. June was united in marriage with John "Jeff" Thornton on Novembr 20, 1945 in Madison, WI. He preceded her in death on November 9, 2008. Surviving are, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Kay Kapper of Katy, TX, Karen DeAnn and Ned J. Ray of Goreville, Rebecca June and Michael C. Blakeley of Madisonville, KY; five grandchildren, Nancy Kay Mallard, Mary Elizabeth Cowger, John Aaron Ray, Kara LeAnn Smiley and Leah Michelle Smith; eleven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Tristen, Cameron, Bretton, Bodhi, Ryan Beth, Eli, Becca, Joseph, Wyatt and Chandler. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and seven siblings. She was a member of the Goreville First Baptist Church in Goreville; the Goreville Progressive Woman's Club and the Goreville First Baptist Church WMU. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday February 14, 2016 at Goreville First Baptist Church with Reverend Joseph Pike officiating. Burial will be in Cana Cemetery Goreville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Goreville First Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois and envelopes will be available at the service. Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale is assisting the family with arrangements.
