Carbondale - Charlotte Ann Metheny passed away on October 24, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents A.B. Schmerbauch and Ann Cathcart, Husband, Ray D. Metheny and nephew Michael Schmerbauch.
Charlotte was born at Cairo, Illinois on January 17, 1933. After graduating from Cairo High School in 1951, she was employed by Woodward Hardware, Nellie Bly Dress Shoppe, First National Bank, and Burkhart Manufacturing Plan. She later retired from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Charlotte was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Cairo. In 1954 she married Ray D. Metheny and enjoyed being a homemaker. After their daughters were born, Charlotte was a 4-H and Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. After moving to Carbondale in 1999, Charlotte joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, Jackson County Homemakers and the Shawnee Quilters. For several years she made over one hundred quilt tops for the Kids’ quilt Project. Charlotte was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed helping others; making cancer caps, lap robes, Anna’s quilts, and many other items. She particularly enjoyed spending time at Calico Country where she made many demonstration items and assisted others with their creations.
Charlotte is survived by her daughters Janet Metheny (Robert Shissler); Cheryl A. Metheny (Andrew Smith); grandson Clint Metheny; granddaughters Stacy, Angel, Andrea Smith; great-grandchildren DeAndre, Destany, and Alexandrea Smith; and great-great grandsons Earl and Destin Henderson; brother Robert P. Schmerbauch (Charlene); nieces Karen Buchler (Gary); Laurie Herbert (Eric); great nieces Kristina and Lauren Buchler; great nephews Corey and Maxwell Herbert; and great-great nephew Chase Matheny.
Visitation will be Friday, October 28, 2016, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, Illinois. Graveside service will be held at Caledonia Cemetery, Sparta, Illinois on Saturday, October 29, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Delano Scott officiating.
In keeping with Charlotte’s wishes memorials are the preferred form or remembrance and may be made to Anna’s Quilts c/o Calico Country 2525 Fairview Drive, Carbondale, IL, 62901; Hannah House Child Development Center, PO Box 999, Carbondale, IL 62901; or St Mary’s Catholic School, c/o Mary Long, 911 Swanwick, Chester, IL, 62233. Memorials will also be accepted at the Funeral Home.
