Dr. Conrad C. Hinckley

Dr. Conrad Cutler Hinckley died Thursday, September 27, 2018 in Century Assisted Living, Carbondale, Illinois. Conrad was born May 8, 1934 in Fort Worth, Texas to Herbert M Hinckley and Sarah Burton Hinckley. He graduated from Highland Park High school, Dallas, Texas in 1953. After serving in the US Army, stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, as a radar mechanic, he received his BA and MS degrees in 1959 and 1960 from The University of North Texas.



He earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964. After two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the UT, he joined the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale faculty in 1966 becoming a full professor of chemistry until retirement in 1998. Dr. Hinckley performed research at Argonne National Laboratory on a research program in 1967. Conrad’s receiving an Alfred P. Sloan fellowship allowed him time for further research and study at Oxford University, England in 1974 and 1975.



Dr. Hinckley received the Kaplan Sigma Xi Research Award for his discovery and development of Lanthanide Shift-Reagents. He served as President of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society in 1987 and 1988 and received the Outstanding Researcher Award, College of Science, in 1994.



Conrad married Nelda Jean in Argyle, Texas Nov. 17, 1956. He is survived by his wife, Nelda, his son, Russell Hinckley and wife, Sue of New York City, NY., and his daughter, Rev. Kristin Adele Bradfield of Arcata California and son-in-law David Bradfield, and grandchildren, Trevor C. Hinckley, Ianto West, Hillary Bradfield, and Meredith Bradfield.



He was preceded in death by his daughter Galen Joanne Hinckley, brother, Herbert M. Hinckley, Jr. MD., his parents, and his beloved dog, Freya.



Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 2 at First United Methodist Church, 214 West Main Street, Carbondale with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. and graveside services at Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale, officiated by Rev. Alan Rhein, pastor. Funeral arrangements are by Meredith Funeral Home.
