Carbondale - Evelin Spain, 83, gracefully answered heaven's call on September 15, 2026, and is now reunited with her beloved husband, Robert.
Evelin's life was one of remarkable strength, perseverance, and love. Born on May 13, 1943, in Potsdam, Germany, she experienced the hardships of a divided Germany as a child. At the age of 9, she and her mother and siblings fled East Germany to the West, leaving behind their home and belongings to begin a new life. Her family spent time in refugee camps before eventually establishing a home of their own.
While still living in Germany, Evelin met an American soldier named Robert Spain. Their love story would eventually bring her and their children to the United States in March of 1967, where they married and built their life together.
Evelin had a generous heart and found happiness in making others feel loved and cared for. She was an amazing cook and could always find a reason to bake cupcakes for someone special. Her family was the light of her life, but her grandchildren, who called her "Oma" held a particularly special place in her heart. Evelin will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Evelin is survived by her son, Robert (Angie) Spain Jr.; daughters, Dagmar (David) Alexander and Jerri Spain; granddaughters, Paige (Jacob Linze) Alexander and Amelia Spain; great-granddaughter, Jordan Alexander-Beck; brother, Hans Dieter Kahl; and sister, Anneliese Wehry.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Eric Spain; brother, Gerold Fiek; and her mother, Frieda Kahl.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026 at 4:00 PM in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Evelin's name to the American Cancer Society and will be taken at the funeral home.
