Gary Starwalt

CARBONDALE - Gary William Starwalt, who departed this life on November 3, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on December 25, 1948, in Urbana, Illinois, Gary was a proud American, whose life was filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in his endeavors. 

Gary was a long-time student at SIU. He carved out a successful career in the telecommunications industry, where he was known for his exceptional sales skills and dedication to his work. He worked at Verizon over 20 years and then for SIU for several years.

He is survived by his dear brother, Dan Starwalt, and four step-brothers, Chip, Bob, John and Jim Runyan, who will carry the fond memories of their time together as a testament to the bond they shared. Gary's legacy will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, as his infectious spirit and passion for life touched countless lives. 

A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at later date. 

Gary was preceded in death by: parents, John Starwalt, Phyllis Runyan, and Kenneth Runyan.
