Janet Borowitz

CARBONDALE - Janet Borowitz, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Carbondale community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the age of 84. Born in East Saint Louis, Illinois, on October 31, 1941, Janet lived a life rich in love, service, and joy. 

Janet was a dedicated administrative secretary at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she served the university community with grace and professionalism for over 30 years. Her commitment to service extended beyond her career; she was an active volunteer at the Carbondale Public Library and the Women’s Club, and she cherished her time as a devoted member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

A proud mother, Janet leaves behind her beloved children, Diana Hubbard, Michelle (Shane) Dent and Gregory (Rebecca) Borowitz, Jr. Janet was also a cherished grandmother, and she found immense joy in attending the events of her grandchildren, Christopher (Jordan) Hubbard, Jessica (William) Flick, Hannah Borowitz, and Berget Borowitz; great-grandchildren, Mason, Barrett and Malcolm, creating heartfelt memories that will last a lifetime.

Janet treasured her time spent with her sister, Margie, baking cookies with her mother, children and grandchildren. Her love for reading and her deep faith formed the foundation of her vibrant spirit.

In celebration of her life, a memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and the indelible mark she left on all of us.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Finding Forever Animal Rescue, enriching the community she loved so dearly.  Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth (Gillen) and George Sticksel; husband, Gregory Borowitz, Sr.; and siblings, Harry, Ruth, Margaret, George and Walter.
