Makanda - Joan Lavelle Hagan passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 24, 2015. She was born August 8, 1935 in Granite City, Illinois to Johanna Elizabeth Walker (nee Lavelle) and Victor Lionel Walker. Joan attended Roxana High School where she was homecoming queen and graduated in 1953. After high school, Joan worked as a secretary at Olin Mathieson in East Alton, Illinois. In 1956, she married John (Jack) Francis Hagan. He survives and is of Makanda. Joan and Jack raised their family in Godfrey, and in Carbondale, Illinois where Joan also worked at the Carbondale Park District and Carbondale Community High School. She enjoyed an active social life and many friendships made as a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Carbondale Antique Club, Carbondale Women's Club, P.E.O., and several bridge clubs and golf groups, most notably the "Nickle Putters" at Jackson Country Club. In recent years, as a resident of Stone Creek in Makanda, Illinois, Joan embraced her new neighbors and delighted in her part as senior member of the Stone Creek "Bunco B's". Joan had a lifelong passion for learning, particularly history and cultures. She was an avid reader and a PBS devotee, and traveled often throughout the U.S. and abroad, most recently to Russia for her seventy-eighth birthday. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale where she served as a greeter, participated in the RENEW program, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Joan took great pride in her four children and seven grandchildren. They all survive her. Cynthia Hagan (Scott Hendricks) of Carterville, Illinois and granddaughters Katherine Brock (Derek) and Natalie Hendricks; Michael Hagan (Annette) and grandsons Ryan and Kyle Hagan of Algonquin, Illinois; Molly Joan Hagan of Denver, Colorado; Matthew Hagan (Anne) and grandsons Jack, Augie, and Max of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother James Walker. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale with Fr. Robert Flannery officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale. Memorials may be made to WSIU, KET, SIH Foundation Hope is Home Cancer Center, or the Hospice organization of the donor's choice and will be accepted by the Funeral Home.
