Joan Phemister

CARBONDALE - Joan Berdene Phemister, age 93, a beloved member of the Carbondale community, passed away at her home on Friday, January 23, 2026. Born on June 26, 1932, in Carbondale to Raymond and Margaret (Gibbs) Thetford, Joan lived a life full of love, hard work, and dedication to her family and community.

Joan dedicated her career to serving others, beginning her professional life as a nurse before moving on to the railroad and eventually finding her place working in building services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). She was known for her strong work ethic and commitment to her jobs. A lifelong supporter of SIUC Athletics, Joan had season tickets to both SIU football and basketball games for years. She took great pride in her connection to the university and its community.

Outside of work, Joan had a passion for nurturing her yard, particularly her beloved flower garden, where she could often be found tending to her plants. Her nurturing spirit extended to her family, and she cherished spending time with them as they created lasting memories together.

Joan is survived by her son, Terry Dusch and wife Beth of Carterville; granddaughter, Carey Dusch of Nashville, TN; grandson, Jeff Dusch and wife Jenna of Billings, MT; and great-grandchildren, Ross, Blythe and Nolan Dusch. She is also remembered fondly by her siblings, including brothers Larry Thetford of Carbondale and Ronnie Thetford of Marion; and sisters Kay Fike and husband Rich of Pittsburg, Mary Miller-Siegel, and Barbara Wilson of Murphysboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gene Thetford and sister, Jackie Allen.

A celebration of Joan's life will be announced soon where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and share cherished stories of her life.
