CARBONDALE - Karen Lu Smith, beloved wife, mother, sister, and cherished friend, departed peacefully from this world on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the age of 80. Karen lived a life filled with love, purpose, and dedication.
Karen was born on March 12, 1946 in Monmouth, IL to Kenneth and Olive (Toops) Biddle. Karen married Frank Smith on June 15, 1968 in Little York, IL.
A passionate educator, Karen devoted many years to teaching kindergarten and first grade in Rantoul, Illinois, imparting knowledge and nurturing the minds of her young students. Her gentle spirit and unwavering patience made her a beloved figure in the lives of countless children and their families.
Beyond her role as an educator, Karen was a dedicated caretaker to her daughter, Christina. She found joy in cultivating native plants in her garden, creating a sanctuary that reflected her love for nature. Karen also enjoyed sewing, channeling her creativity into beautiful creations that warmed the hearts of those around her.
Karen is survived by her loving husband, Frank Smith; daughter, Christina Smith; sisters, Martha (Gene) Hillman, and Joyce Geater; brother, John Biddle; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Nicholas Smith; parents; and brother, Richard Biddle.
In celebration of her life, a memorial gathering for Karen will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2026 from 3:00pm until 5:00pm at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale where family and friends will gather to honor her memory.
Memorials may be made in Karen's name to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) or local animal shelters and will be accepted at the funeral home.
