Katherine Marie McMurphy

MAKANDA - Katherine Marie McMurphy, age 69, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. 

Kathy was born on September 13, 1956 in Carbondale to Gordon and Wilma (Fischer) Davis. Kathy married Jeffrey McMurphy on February 28, 1976 at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale. 

Kathy dedicated her life to the well-being of others as a physician’s assistant in Southern Illinois for over 25 years. Her compassion and commitment to her patients were unmatched, reflecting her deep love for helping those in need. 

Kathy’s spirit was deeply intertwined with the world around her. She had a profound appreciation for animals, a passion for music, and a love for the outdoors, often finding joy in the serenity of her land in Makanda. She was a true embodiment of kindness, always welcoming family and friends into her life. Kathy took immense pride in supporting her family, especially her beloved grandson, whose hockey career filled her with joy and excitement.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Jeff McMurphy; mother, Wilma Davis; son, Justin McMurphy; daughters, Amber McMurphy and Courtney McMurphy; grandson, Kaden Mulcahy; brothers, George “Butch” (Laura) Davis and Bob (Diane) Davis; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon Davis. 

A Celebration of Life Service for Kathy will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. John Annable officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held starting at 1:00pm on Saturday. For those who cannot attend the Celebration of Life Service it will be live streamed on the funeral home’s website (www.meredithfh.com) and a direct link will be provided here soon. 

Memorials may be made in Kathy’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.
