Liberty Throgmorton

April 2, 1917 — March 28, 2016

Anna – Liberty M. Throgmorton, 98, of Anna, formerly of Makanda, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2016 in Union County Hospital, Anna.

Liberty was born April 2, 1917 in Royalton to Francesco and Julia (Chabloz) Balla. Her Italian immigrant parents named her Liberty in honor of the Statue of Liberty. At the age of six years, Liberty and her parents moved to a farm near Makanda and Giant City Park, and she continued to live in the same home for 90 years until 2014 when she moved to Anna to be near her family.

She married Dwight Throgmorton on April 3, 1939 in Jackson, MO and they shared 70 years together until his death in 2009.

Liberty was a 50-year member of the Jackson County Home Extension, a 50-year member of the Makanda Order of Eastern Star, and a Giant City School board member and officer when the school was first consolidated in the 1950’s. During World War II while her husband served in the Army, she worked at the Ordinance Ammunition Plant in Williamson County. She was a member of Zion Methodist Church until it closed then became a member of Drury Christian Church until her death.

Liberty loved to visit and talk with people and never knew a stranger. She was a giving, loving person who enjoyed helping others whether it was family, friend or neighbor. She enjoyed vegetable gardening and loved the many flowers in her yard especially her favorite irises, but more than anything she enjoyed spending time with her family, preparing meals for them and making sure no one went home hungry in true Italian fashion.

Liberty is survived by her son Marland (Barbara) Throgmorton of Anna; daughter Marsha Burke of Jonesboro; grandchildren Terri Hudson of Anna and Dan (Aimee) Burke of Mt. Pleasant, NC; great-grandchildren Tiffany (Josh) Hileman of Anna, Tarah (Brent) Kennedy of Billings, MT, Gideon, Mackay and Teagan Burke of Mt. Pleasant, NC; great-great-grandchildren Drake, Leigha, Isaac and Rosemary Hileman and Blaize Kennedy; nephew Stan Throgmorton of Lomita, CA; and nieces JoLyn Cruz of Lomita, CA and Cassandra Guy of Port Arthur, TX.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by grandsons Aaron Throgmorton, Steven Throgmorton and Timothy Burke; son-in-law John Burke; close cousins Robert Chabloz, Elia Battaglia, Enzo Bianchini and Palma Ronchero.

Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Reverend Tom Stearns officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.
