MURPHYSBORO - Martha Kay James, 86, of Murphysboro, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026 with her family by her side.
Martha Kay was born on December 5, 1939 to Ernest and Martha (Campbell) Davis in Tamms. She married Earl W. "Bud" James on October 12, 1957 at Cornith, MS. He preceded her in death on October 26, 2016.
Martha Kay is survived by son, John James; daughters, Tricia Bersett (Bryan Kuchar) and Angie James (Keith Parks); two grandchildren, Dustin Hicks and wife Lindsay and Brandon Bersett and wife Preeya; two great grandchildren, Kinsley and Colton Hicks; brother, Robert Davis; brother-in-law, Bill Kirk; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Kathy James; and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl "Bud" James; parents; son-in-law, Mike Bersett; sister, Margaret Kirk; brother, Fred Davis and sisters-in-law, Susann Davis and Charlene Davis.
Throughout her life, Martha was devoted to caring for others. She worked as an extraordinary care aide in the Carbondale District 95, making a meaningful impact on the lives of countless children. Her passion for teaching was evident in her long-standing commitment to preschool and Bible school classes at Walnut Street Baptist Church, where she inspired many young minds and hearts.
Martha Kay had a profound love for animals and was an active advocate for wildlife rescue. Her kindness extended not only to her family but also to all creatures, big and small, and the importance of compassion for all. She was an active member of the Ridge Church of Carbondale and also enjoyed spending time with her family and following the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team and SIU Saluki basketball.
Funeral services for Martha Kay will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at the funeral home.
Memorials in Martha Kay's name may be made to Alzheimer's Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
