Orpha Jane Borgsmiller Striegel passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Nov. 30th in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who greatly blessed the lives of all she touched. Orpha Jane was born in Murphysboro, Illinois on October 5, 1925 to William Joseph Borgsmiller and Effie Mae Jennings Borgsmiller. She graduated from the DePaul School of Nursing in 1946 and was the first registered nurse to work on the University of Illinois campus. She married her devoted husband of 61 years, Dr. Leon (Doc) Frederick Striegel, on November 13, 1948. Orpha's talents were many, but her eye for painting included oil, acrylic, watercolor, ceramic and china. She was a member of the International Porcelain Art Teachers Association, taught china painting at John A. Logan College and had a gallery showing of her art work at Madison House in Washington, D.C. She shared her husband's passions of making Striegelini wine and sailing, including winning the Rebel National title in 1963. She also enjoyed attending football games at Carbondale Community High School and Southern Illinois University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Leon (Doc) Frederick Striegel; her father and mother, William Joseph Borgsmiller and Effie Mae Borgsmiller; son, Alfred William Striegel; brother, Dr. William Jennings Borgsmiller and sister, Dorothy Jean Rowan. She is survived by four sons, Mr. Robert F. Striegel of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; Dr. & Mrs. William L. Striegel (Patricia) of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; Mr. & Mrs. James J. Striegel (Terri) of Flower Mound, Texas; and Mr. Thomas M. Striegel of Heath, Texas, seven grandchildren: Timothy, Allison, Elizabeth, Eric, Anthony, Preston, and Shelby; her sister, Ruth Mary Wasmer and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are invited to make memorial gifts to the DePaul Foundation, 12303 DePaul Drive, Bridgeton, MO 63044 which will benefit nursing education. Arrangements are under the direction of Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale, Illinois and Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home of Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
