Phoebe Faye Cox

Makanda – Phoebe Faye Cox, 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.



Phoebe was born on September 3, 1928 in Makanda to Walter Dewey Cox and Eloise (Allen) Cox.



Phoebe is survived by sister Jane Cox of Makanda, several great nieces and nephews. This includes nephew, Harold (Sue) Cox of Carbondale; and two nieces Cheryl (Bob) Hughey of Carbondale; and Patricia Raczynski of Birmingham, Alabama; and a sister-in-law Loretta Cox of Makanda.



She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Harold Cox and Robert Cox.



Phoebe was an alumni of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale Illinois campus where she obtained her Master Degree. She went on to have a successful career working in the Physical Education field as a teacher for over 34 years in Carbondale Community High School.

She retired from her services there in 1985.



Phoebe was an attendee at the Boskydell Baptist Church and was actively involved in their missions to yard sales. She was also a proud former Makanda Evergreen Cemetery board member. Likewise, her vast interests spanned into the field of genealogy where she served as a member of the Jackson County Historical Society. She will be deeply missed by all the people she helped throughout her life and those that knew and loved her.



Services for Phoebe will be at noon on Friday, March 17, 2017 at G. Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale Illinois with Reverend Stephen Combs officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Evergreen Cemetery in Makanda, Illinois. Visitation will be open from 10:00 AM until time of service.

Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Evergreen Cemetery, Boskydell Baptist Church and Jackson County Historical Society.
