MAKANDA - Richard W. Bittle, 76, passed comfortably away, June 9, 2025, in his home with his family by his side.
Richard was born August 10, 1948 to Bob and Virginia (Hickam) Bittle in Alto Pass.
On May 10, 1968, Richard married Marcia L. (Stearns) at Boskydell Baptist Church. During their marriage they had two children, Richard David (Kathy) Bittle and Brandi Leigh. They both survive.
Richard is also survived by his parents, his mother-in-law, Lora (Forby) Stearns, his sister, Jean Ann (Gerald) Lindsey, sisters-in-law, Christine Bittle and Veronica (Stearns) Kinley, and brother-in-law, Michael D. (Barb) Stearns. Three granddaughters, Katie (Jon) Davis, Leah (Brandon) Lewis, and Brooke Inman. Five great-grandchildren, Paisleigh, Kaislyn, Aiden, Ellie, and Ariyah. His sixth great-grandchild is expected next month.
Richard served in the USAF from 1969-1972. He held many jobs and worked hard his entire life. From working for the railroad, construction, Stearns Locker Plant, and finally SIU where he retired from in 2015. However, his greatest honor and position he held was Pastor of Unity Baptist Church from 1996 until time of his death.
He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, David L. Stearns in February 1996, his brother, Everett L. Bittle in February 2025, and his beloved wife, Marcia L. Bittle in March 2025.
Services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Unity Baptist Church located at 57 Haven of Love Drive in Makanda, where he pastored for almost 30 years. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of service on Saturday. His friend and pastor, while he lived in Madisonville, KY, Brother Roy G. Ellis, will be officiating his final service.
Richard will be receiving full military honors by the Alto Pass Area Veterans when his earthly body is laid to rest at Alto Pass Cemetery.
