Robert "Bob" Mayer

Robert (Bob) Mayer, 87, of Makanda, passed away at 11:15 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2013, at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Pastors James Jackson and Tom Stearns officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to service time on Thursday. Burial will be held in Lipe Cemetery, Makanda. Memorials may be made to the Lipe Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home. Bob was born in Alton to Guy William and Esther Lillian (Barrett) Mayer on April 28, 1926. From August 23, 1944, to July 9, 1946, Robert served his country in the US Army as a radio operator in Central Europe. On August 30, 1947, he married Ruby I. Nance in Makanda and together they have celebrated 66 years of marriage. Survivors include his wife, Ruby, four sons and daughters-in-law: Douglas (Peggy) Mayer, Russell (Joyce) Mayer, Robert Lee (Debbie) Mayer all of Makanda and Dallas (Cheryl) Mayer of Carbondale; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson; two brothers, Jim Mayer of Marion and Joe Mayer of Murphysboro; one sister, Geraldine Remrey of Clinton, IA. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice Craft, Jackie and Barbara Mayer; and two brothers, Guy E. and Richard Mayer. Bob worked at Tuck Tape in the maintenance department for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of Union Hill Christian Church in Makanda, and was a minister in several local churches. He enjoyed attending Grange Hall Baptist Church for the past three years. In his spare time Bob enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, raising cattle and spending time with his dog, Amos. The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Illinois, Addus Health Care, and the VA in Marion for their special caring way with Bob.
