Du Quoin

DU QUOIN – Stephen W. Cooper, 78, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at Fairview Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

Stephen was born on October 11, 1947 to Jack B. and Josephine Mae (Bond) Cooper in Saint Louis, MO.

Stephen is survived by his sister, Susan (Kenneth) Baker of Dallas, TX; cousins Amy Bond of Florida, and Christine Bond of Michigan; dear friend Elaine Kirchner of Du Quoin, brother-in-law Don Lingle, nephew Andrew Lingle, and Jeffrey Baker; and nieces Dawn Oestricher, Lindsay Baker, Stephanie Deatherage, Sarah Martini, and his beloved dog ZuZu.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sharon Lingle, nephew Christopher Baker, and his dog of twenty years, Hallie.

Stephen was a compassionate friend to all who knew him, and despite being disabled at an early age, was often caring for those in need, including his mother. When he wasn’t helping others, he loved movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s, sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of actors and their roles. He enjoyed the arts, and spent time sketching drawings. Stephen also appreciated the workmanship of others, collecting clocks, candlesticks, and glassware. Stephen was a dedicated friend to those he cherished, and he was always there for them.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephen’s memory may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale assisted the family with arrangements. To leave a story or memory of Stephen, visit www.meredithfh.com
