DuQuoin – Stephen Thomas McInerney, 56, passed away at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with his family by his side.
Steve was born on July 20, 1960 to Thomas Joseph and Judith Anne (Coleman) McInerney. On October 13, 1984 he married Sherry Rich. She survives and is of DuQuoin.
Survivors include his wife Sherry; parents, Thomas and Judith McInerney; son, Michael McInerney; two daughters, Taylor (Lance) Jaggers, and Alexandra McInerney; two brothers, Daniel (Beth) McInerney and Thomas (Margaret) McInerney; three sisters, Terry (Joe) Reidy, Julie (Marty) Racz and Jodie (Dan) Berry; and one grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Steve was a member of IATA Hall of Fame and formerly served as president of the IATA where he co-authored the current state practice act for athletic training. Steve served for many years as the Illinois representative to the GLATA Executive Council and NATA liaison to the NFHS. Steve was also the Northwestern University football injury spotter since the inception of the program back in 2011 up until his passing. A passionate clinician and incredible relationship builder, Steve thrived as an Athletic Trainer in professional baseball and in the secondary school setting. He also previously served as a high school Athletics Director and Dean. Steve's last employment was with the Southern Illinois Miners baseball team as Head Athletic Trainer.
A funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church East Campus in Geneva, IL at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2017 with Brad Vineyard officiating. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
There will also be a time of visitation Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be at a later date.
Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the education fund for his son, Michael McInerney, in care of Linda Swinford, 435 N. Winters Street, DuQuoin, IL 62832; or the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, PO Box 1848, Longmont, CO 80502.
